Exactly 40 years ago, on October 12, 1979, the Stichting Bevordering Muziekimprovisatie (SBM) was founded in Tilburg. The Foundation soon acquired its own stage through financial support from a large group of jazz lovers and jazz musicians who all guaranteed a sum. All this was enough to take out a mortgage for a jazz club. A crowdfunding campaign avant la lettre and also the start of Paradox.
We will of course celebrate this with a lot of music and events. The whole week there are extra concerts such as Rund om Hause # 2 (musical walk through Willem II street), Peter Bernstein Quartet, ZIV RAVITZ – NIR FELDER – WILL VINSON, PAUL VAN KEMENADE / LOUIS MOHOLO AFRICAL CONNECTION & SKUNK FUNK INTERNATIONAL, an international Brecker Brothers Tribute ft. Teus Nobel. On 12 October 2019, however, we kick off with 3 groups that are inextricably linked to Paradox: naturally VLEK, “our house orchestra” for more than 10 years, the Ernst Reijseger / Harmen Fraanje duo and the Paul van Kemenade Classic Quintet ft special guest Mete Erker.
This band is a particularly driven and stubborn collective of musicians with their roots in improvised music, jazz and alternative rock music. With more than 150 years of stage experience together, the men have been guaranteeing an unparalleled musical live experience for 10 years! VLEK was founded in 2009 and has since played on many stages and festivals. With their new repertoire they have once again conjured up surprising music from the top hat: driving dance beats, dirty rock riffs, catchy melodies, African grooves, and cinematic vistas. A VLEK concert is a rollercoaster: from melodic to unruly, from uplifting to silent, from big band to heavy metal, from melancholic melancholic to unabashed cheerfulness. VLEK stands for playing pleasure, adventure and improvisation at the cutting edge: expect the unexpected! Their latest musical feat is the album “Music on the far site of the moon”
